Signal and Noise: Why Restraint Is Itself a Coherence Practice

Every signal has to travel through noise to be heard. That is true of a radio transmission, and it is true of a life.

Claude Shannon gave the idea its formal shape in 1948, in a paper more responsible for the modern world than almost anyone realises. Signal, in his terms, is the part of a transmission that carries information. Noise is everything riding alongside it that doesn’t. The signal-to-noise ratio isn’t a metaphor there — it is a measurable quantity, and it determines whether a message survives the channel it travels through.

Most advice about visibility, output, or being heard treats volume as the answer: say more, post more, fill more of the channel. But that is precisely backwards if the underlying logic holds. Adding more content without adding more actual information does not raise the signal. It raises the noise floor, and buries what was already there a little deeper.

Entropy, and the Cost of Talking

Thermodynamics gives the same insight a different vocabulary. Entropy is the tendency of a system to disperse toward disorder — toward the state with the most equally likely configurations, which is also the state that carries the least distinguishing information. A message that says everything says, informationally, almost nothing, for the same reason a gas that has fully dispersed has no discernible pattern left: maximum entropy is maximum sameness.

Negentropy — organised, structured, pattern-bearing output — costs something to produce. It requires holding a shape against the natural pull toward dispersion. This is true of a sentence and true of a nervous system. Saying less, and meaning more of it, is not a stylistic preference. It is closer to a thermodynamic discipline: refusing to let a system dissipate into noise for the sake of activity.

What the Older Traditions Called Restraint

Long before information theory existed, several traditions arrived at the same practical conclusion from a different direction — not through mathematics, but through observation of what actually helps and what merely performs.

The Quaker meeting for worship is built on silence, not as absence but as the precondition for a genuine word to be heard when it eventually comes. The Desert Fathers of early Christian monasticism practised hesychia — stillness — treating unnecessary speech as a kind of spiritual noise that had to be cleared before anything true could be perceived. Taoism’s wu wei carries a parallel logic outside the specifically verbal domain: not the absence of action, but the absence of forced, noise-generating action that doesn’t actually move anything.

None of these traditions were talking about content strategy. They were describing the same underlying structure Shannon later formalised: a channel has finite capacity, and everything you put into it that isn’t signal is actively degrading what is.

Nature Runs on This Principle Too

A predator that expends energy on constant, low-value movement starves; the ones that survive conserve energy through long stillness and commit fully only when the signal — an actual opportunity — appears. Radio astronomy is a more literal case: the entire discipline exists because faint, real signals from deep space are drowned by noise from every terrestrial and atmospheric source imaginable, and the science is substantially the science of filtering noise well enough for a real signal to become visible at all.

Restraint as a Coherence Practice

Put together, this is not simply an aesthetic argument for saying less. It is a structural one: in a channel of finite capacity — a nervous system, an audience’s attention, a relationship — every unit of noise directly reduces the space available for signal to be received at all.

This reframes restraint. It is not passivity, and it is not the absence of contribution. It is active protection of a channel’s capacity to carry something real. Choosing not to speak, not to post, not to add, is not a gap in the work. Under the right conditions, it is the work — clearing the channel so that when signal does arrive, it can actually be heard.
